Thanks to
the foresight and wisdom of the late Earlah Swift, Mariah
Alpacas brought the first alpacas into Northern New England.
Over the next 17 years the herd grew both in numbers and
quality, boasting a herd of primarily Peruvian alpacas in a
rainbow of colors. Earlah was an early “pioneer” in the U.S.
alpaca industry and worked tirelessly and lovingly to create a
superior North American herd. She was loved by many and we miss
her a great deal.
In the summer of 2005 we purchased the entire Mariah herd from mom's
estate. Having to select a new name for the herd it seemed only
fitting that we call ourselves Mi Madre Alpacas to honor the
woman who was so passionate about and devoted to her alpacas. Mi
Madre is Spanish for my mother. We believe that she would be
pleased and we are proud to be second generation alpaca
breeders.
Although we have had a predominantly huacaya herd we are now changing our
focus to increase our suri herd. We will still keep a huacaya
breeding program but are working on reducing the number of
huacayas and have been buying suris. You will find a number of
high quality huacayas listed here at VERY competitive prices.
We believe that responsible animal husbandry was paramount to mom's
success and we are committed to the same high standards she set.
We believe that we learned from the very best. The primary focus
of our breeding program is to produce structurally sound and
correct animals with the highest quality fleece. This is evident
in both our huacaya and suri alpacas. We hope you’ll come and
visit. We love to buy, sell, trade and talk alpacas!
